Oregon State University's Center For the Study of Language and MindIf you're looking for a new school to join, the Oregon State University's Center for the Study of Language and Mind (CSLLM) might be for you. I was lucky enough to attend an orientation class that gives you a good overview of the CSLM.The first thing that attracted me to the CSLM is its location: Corvallis, Oregon. Unlike many other campus research centers, the CSLM is close to the region's most interesting places. It's actually really close to the Corvallis Zoo, which has a really amazing atmosphere.The next thing that did this to me is a lecture in the science lab, where the instructor took you through several experiments in different levels of difficulty. Like an online tutorial, they were also interactive. They gave you a chance to listen to others' experiences, get your own ideas, and choose the difficulty level you wanted to learn. This helped me learn a lot, as it gave me a chance to feel the learner's perspect ive.I later discovered what made the CSLM different from the other chemistry grade center in my area. Its research was focused on students' strengths and weaknesses. The center is mostly about helping students who are already working in a certain field or help them identify those skills that they will need in the future.I've always been fascinated by plants, so I was really excited when I learned that the CSLM also conducts research on plants. The center has a huge laboratory, including different forms of farming for various crops, like ethanol or biopesticides. It's not really easy to access a CSLM education without going to the laboratory, but this is well worth it.Because of their research interests, it's also really important that the CSLM has a social aspect. They have a networking tool for students to use, an online forum, and a skill sharing system. They even have a learning exchange program, where you can get hands-on experience through a collaboration.On top of all these in teresting aspects, the CSLM is a really rewarding experience, since it focuses more on the experiences and growth of students than it does the content. I'm very happy with my new job.As a sign of how special the CSLM is, I was invited to speak at the University of Oregon, and a similar invitation went out to the University of Arizona. If you're a CSLLM student, or looking for a research career, consider getting enrolled at the school that attracts you. They will make you proud.
